Foundations of Detection & Link Budgets

Will the link close? The few numbers you need before hardware touches a signal.

    Where This Module Goes

Noise figure, the link budget, and signal space: just enough to tell whether a link will work and to read a constellation.

    Learning Objectives

    1. I can define noise figure and explain how each stage of a receiver chain, the first above all, sets the system's noise performance.
    2. I can compute a link budget for a specified geometry, transmitter, and antenna configuration, and compare it with the signal an SDR shows.
    3. I can describe signal-space concepts (basis functions, constellations, decision regions) and apply them to a digital modulation scheme.

    In This Module

    Lesson · L1

    Course Introduction

What an SDR is, the signals around you, and how the course is run.

    Lesson · L2

    Noise Figure and Link Budget

Noise figure through a receiver chain, and the link budget that says whether a signal will arrive. Objectives 1.1, 1.2.

    Lesson · L3

    Signal Space

Basis functions, constellations, and decision regions: the picture every digital receiver works from. Objective 1.3.
